December 2021 Newsletter

As 2021 winds down, all of us here at Postman are looking back and taking stock of the dizzying amount of product updates, features, and capabilities we brought to the Postman API Platform this year. It's quite a list, and so many of these improvements were driven by requests and suggestions from our community. We remain endlessly thankful for the feedback from all of you.

In addition to the platform updates, this year also saw inspirational highlights in the areas of community, “APIs for good,” and education that the team here is really proud of.

So let's take a quick look at key 2021 moments in four areas:

  • Platform highlights
  • Community highlights
  • “APIs for good” highlights
  • Educational and instructional highlights

2021 Platform Highlights

With the new Postman API Platform, we redefined API Management and created a whole new category to help organizations succeed in the API-first world. We brought together different tools and processes into one definitive, authoritative place with the mission to support the entire API development lifecycle. Check out the new features and versions the Postman team released this year.

You asked, we answered by supporting asynchronous protocols

This year marked a turning point for protocols in Postman as we expanded beyond an HTTP API client and added support for these asynchronous protocols:

  • WebSocket protocol support to enable continuous two-way communication between your browser and the web server
  • Extended support for Socket.IO library to enable real-time, bidirectional, and event-based communication between web clients and servers, using WebSockets under the hood
  • WSDL (Web Services Description Language) support that can help you leverage Postman's runtime, lifecycle management, and collaboration features for your WSDL-described SOAP service

More integrations

We added integrations to a few of your favorite tools, now available from the API Builder within Postman.

  • Source code management: GitHub, Bitbucket, and GitLab to manage API management workflows
  • CI/CD: Travis CI and CircleCI to link your CI/CD pipelines to your API tests
  • API gateways: AWS API Gateway to view recent deployments and events in one click
  • Application performance monitoring: New Relic to get more observability insights

Here, security never sleeps

We know API security and privacy can keep you up at night. That's why we introduced a new token scanner, custom alerts, security warnings and more to help you stay on top of your security posture.

API collaboration just got easier

Last spring, we announced unlimited API collaboration for teams of up to three in Postman to fuel greater innovation. And in October, we released a new capability in the platform that made it even easier to manage workflows and elements inside your workspaces by using SCIM (System for Cross-domain Identity Management), organizing members into functional groups to mimic their organizational structure, and introducing three new workspace-level roles: Admin, Editor, and Viewer.

Universal search at your fingertips

A new universal search enabled filtering by type of element (workspace, collection, API, team), searching keywords as well as selecting the scope in which you want to do the search (personal, team, or public) and has evolved a lot since its introduction a year ago.

Improved API discovery with the Postman Private API Network and recommended collections

We heard your request to make APIs within an organization discoverable to avoid duplication of effort and we answered that with the Private API Network. And there's even more exciting news: a brand new collection-recommendations feature is here to help you discover and work with public APIs quickly and more easily, right where you need them.

Adding new team members is more streamlined

We received feedback that the process of adding team members to a Postman plan wasn't as quick or as flexible as it should be. We responded: The new Auto-Flex team policy means you can add as many team members as you need, at any time, without adding any up-front costs.

WYSIWYG Documentation Editor

We released a new WYSIWYG description editor that simplifies authoring descriptions in your documentation considerably—no need to use markdown or preview your changes.

Brand-new Postman Flows

We recently released a beta version of Postman Flows, a brand-new, low code/no-code API workflow builder. You can use Flows to chain requests, handle data, and create real world workflows right in your Postman workspace. Give it a go, watch the video and let us know if you have any feedback.
